When stress, a person's immune system will decrease. That is why if a person experiences stress, especially if the stress is chronic, then he will be easy to attacked by diseases such as heart disease, cancer and dementia.  Even so until now there is no expert who knows how the mechanism up to stress can result in heart disease and cancer.

However, researchers from Sweden, Sara K. Bengtsson of Ume University claim to find answers to why chronic stress contributes to the development of Alzheimer's disease or the most common form of senile dementia alias. According to him this is caused by increased levels of stress steroid in the brain during periods of stress that have the power to inhibit the activity of the brain in general.

Bengtsson view the existence of increase in one of type of brain steroids called allopregnanolon chronically that it turns out can accelerate the development of Alzheimer's disease in two experimental mice. Even the mice that levels of stress his steroid, be increased to show the existence of disruption in memory and learning ability early in the early the development of the disease, whereas normally the symptoms it would not appear.

After experiencing a period where levels of allopregnanolon increased are chronically, brain experimental mice are also known to have high levels of beta-amyloid is high. Beta-amyloid is a protein that form plaques between the nerve cells in the brain of Alzheimer's sufferers. Studies conducted by Bengtsson also showed levels of beta-amyloid is high were also associated with dysfunction of brain synapses (nerve cell connections in the brain).

This study is considered important remember the existence of the fact that the number of sufferer this Alzheimer's disease is increasing from year to year but the cause is not much understood. In fact, more than five million people Americans suffering from Alzheimer's, and according to the Alzheimer's Association, one of eight the elderly from Americans are living with this disease. Even the prevalence of this disease is expected to rise to three-fold in the period of 30 years in the future.

Although still requiring further study, other experts also responded to this study with giving emphasis about the importance a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of dementia. "The biggest threat in our lives are our own lifestyle. If you no undue haste and practicing a number of relaxation techniques, then things it will impact on your health condition," says stress expert, Dr. Kathleen Hall.

Things this also recommended that the elderly doing physical activity, brain exercises, meditation as well as expanding social networks to prevent stress and create a more calm lifestyle.
